Assessing Gov Emmanuel’s integrated industrial devt strategy

It is virtually three years now since Mr. Udom Emmanuel came into saddle of power as the Akwa Ibom State Governor. During his electioneering, Emmanuel had vehemently declared his commitment to industrializing and making the State a hub for investors.

First, for sufficient electricity, Emmanuel has invested in power sector more than any other state in the country. Apart from completing 3311KV, 2X15 MVA electricity injection substation in Uyo metropolis, about 1500megawatts (mw) will soon be added to the State’s current power generation capacity.

However, upon completion of the proposed power plants by QIPP, ALSCON and Ibom Power Phase 2 with 545mw, 540mw, and 500mw respectively, Akwa Ibom will become an electricity hub for power tourism. When this 132kV line is completed and linked with the existing 132kV transmission line from Uyo – Eket – Ekim – Ikot Abasi, Akwa Ibom will be completely ringed on 132kV.

In the aspect of good road networks, so far, the administration of Governor Udom Emmanuel has constructed 1700KM of roads across the state. The Governor’s rural development programme is creating opportunity for rural areas to be linked with the state capital and open access for easy movement of farm produce to where the target buyers are is quite commendable. Beyond this, the Akwa Ibom State Government, through Akwa Ibom Roads and Other Infrastructure Maintenance Agency, AKROIMA, has been ensuring that no pothole is found in the street of Akwa Ibom.

This agency has also graded rural roads in virtually all the local governments. Unlike his predecessors, Governor Emmanuel is targeted at correcting imbalance in the construction of roads across the state. All over the world, civil service is known to be bedrock of any Government’s successful plan, as such, apart from employing young vibrant graduates to fill various positions in the State Civil Service, Governor Emmanuel has approved training programmes for all the civil servants in the State both at the ministry level and even outside the state.

As a man who was groomed in the corporate world, for him to achieve good output in his government, the engine room must be well equipped to deliver, that is exactly what he has been doing.

Aside from the above efforts, in Africa, women provide critical support to their households and communities. In addition to child care and other household responsibilities, it is estimated that they are responsible for 70% of crop production, 50% of animal husbandry, 60% of marketing and nearly 100% of food-processing. Governor Emmanuel has been embarking on inclusive industrialisation, which according to Li Yong, UNIDO Director General is ensuring that no one is left behind, especially not women. Women is said to be critical group if industrialization policy of any government must succeed, not only because gender equality is fundamental to human right, but it enables faster economic growth, shared prosperity and sustainable development.

The 2016 Global Gender Gap report shows a positive correlation between gender equality and gross domestic product, economic competitiveness and human development.

It was on this basis that the Governor’s wife, Mrs Martha Udom Emmanuel is committed to ensuring that no family in the state is left behind in the fight to overcoming poverty. With this holistic industrialisation policy of Governor Emmanuel, Akwa Ibom will soon become haven for investors.
