Osun Communty relives reigns of late monarch

OSOGBO—THE border town of Ifetedo, unarguably the farthest Osun town from Osogbo, the state capital, may not be in the league of big towns in Osun State.

However, what the town does not have in size, it has  in the calibre of men that populated it, more importantly, in its traditional institution. Akinrera Ifetedo, the hometown of far famed, legal luminary, Mr. Yusuff Alli (SAN), recently lost its monarch, Oba Isaac Adebare Ilori, who became monarch at the age of 76.

He passed on recently after eight years of eventful reign. In honour of the monarch, Ifetedo community, the next door neighbour to Oke Igbo, an Ondo State town, where Igbo Olodumare, the mystical forest, written about by the late D.O Fagunwa in his books, is located, held interdenominational service for the late Oba Adebare.

Speaking in turns, the peaceful nature of the late monarch was prominent in the deluge of tributes poured out by those present.

Leading the tributes, the Balogun of Ifetedo, who is next in rank to Olubosin, High Chief Akin Akinrera, said: “I contested the stool with the late Oba Adebare but he was made an Oba in November, 2010.

“The monarch that reigned before him created crisis in Ifetedo. So, upon his demise, we could not move forward for two years. Oba Adebare did not say I contested with him, two months after he was made Oba, he elevated me from the position of lesser chief.

“Unknown to me, he had good plans for me. He wanted an elite in a major position of authority and his plan worked out well.

Few months after my elevation, the next in rank to Olubosin died and I was made Balogun.

“According to a 1959 Chieftaincy Declaration guiding emergence of Oba in Ifetedo, when an Olubosin joins his ancestors, Balogun automatically becomes Olubosin.

I appeal to our people to ensure the legacy of peace and large heartedness left behind by the late Oba Adebare is sustained. “I have promised to keep Ifetedo together in peace as done by the late Oba Adebare. It is a tough call but we owe the memory of our late monarch that duty.”

Eulogies for late monarch

Speaking in similar vein, the chairman, Ifetedo Progressive Union, IPU, Mr. Gbenga Ojuade and the member representing Ife South State Consistency in the Osun State House of Assembly, Mr. Folorunsho Bamisayemi, said Oba Adebare’s peaceful stance saved the town from crises when it was thrown into darkness for almost three years. In his remarks, Ojuade said: “for three years, we were in darkness in this town.

At a point, our people could no longer bear it but the late Oba Adebare insisted they should not resort to violence. He managed the situation well. We will miss him.”

Speaking to newsmen in Ifetedo, on the sidelines of the interdenominational service held for the immediate past Olubosin of Ifetedo, Oba Isaac Ilori at the weekend, Adegbite said the border town would have been completely forgotten had UniOsun not sited one of its campuses in the town, explaining that the town would benefit more, if more colleges of the university are moved to the town.

Recalling the pivotal role played by the late Olubosin at ensuring UniOsun campus had a smooth take off in the town, Adegbite said: “He worked day and night to ensure safety of UniOsun students living in this town. The campus of that university has helped Ifetedo and we appeal to Osun State Government to add more to the present Faculty of Law sited in our town.”

He noted that lives of inhabitants of the town had been positively impacted by the presence of the  institution in the town
